The Junk Kingdoms
A collective name for the settlements on the fringe of Church lands, notably around the Siberian Sea, the Saharan Sea and coastal Africa, and the Persian uplands and Indian Archipelagos. They have many different names, cultures, and beliefs, but share the common traits of lack of veneration for Engels, rejection of the Angelic faith, abjuration of Church authority and the Tenth, veneration of false faiths and idols, and reverence for proscipted technology and knowledge. During the Junk Wars, they resisted the Limitanai fiercely, but proved no match for the Engel. However, the challenges of the Dreamseed means that Engels are usually unable to be spared to deal with them, so that the Limitanai and Grimriders are forced to engage them, with mixed results. Most of the Junk Kingdoms bordering Church lands have been either conquered or submitted to the True Faith, but many more in the hinterlands still exist, and still oppose the Church’s holy mission.
The most powerful of the Junk Kingdoms is the island nation of Metropole, located near the equator, off the coast of Africa. There, the Cult of the Machine is thriving, spreading its heretical, atheistic beliefs of humanism and technology among the Junk Kingdoms, and even sending their Technologists into the Church lands to steal ancient technology and subvert the Faithful. Metropole maintains an airfleet of lighter than air ships to defend their skies from Engel and Dreamseed, as well as the towering war machines called machinae. The High Council of their Republic seeks to limit Faith and undo the Angelic Millennium and restore technology and humanism as the dominant belief system in the world, a goal opposed by the Church with the Engel, Grimriders, Inquisition, and witch hunters.
